On-going maintenance of your web server is of vital importance. A well-maintained web server gives you the reassurance that it is performing at its absolute best and guarantees that you are getting maximum value for money from your hardware and software investment.
It is important to recognise that your website and its hosting environment are not static entities that, once developed and configured, can be left without any further attention. Web server software is constantly evolving; there are both releases of new software and frequent updates to existing software. More often than not these updates relate to security vulnerabilities in your web server software which, if not applied, could leave your server open to attack or compromise.
Attacks on the web server hosting your website can lead to your site experiencing down-time or your users encountering slow responses times, both of which will have a negative impact on your business. Loss or theft of users’ personal data from your site could damage your website’s reputation and substantially affect your business.
Do you require a maintenance contract?
Whether you would benefit from a maintenance contract is largely dependent upon your hosting environment. Some sort of maintenance contract is recommended for websites with dedicated hosting or co-located hosting i.e. hosting where you are totally responsible for the configuration, security and maintenance of your web server. Virtual hosting or shared hosting would not require attention of this kind as maintaining the server would be the responsibility of your hosting company.

This service ensures that our clients’ servers are always performing at their optimum level and that all their server software is completely up-to-date with the latest service packs and fixes. OBS Group sees this as an essential service for companies who have a website that is complex enough to require dedicated hosting but who are not large enough to have their own in-house IT resources to carry out the maintenance.
What does a typical maintenance contract include?
Typically, our maintenance contracts include the following services:
- ensuring all server software is up-to-date with the latest service packs and patches
- ensuring all server software is secured against new threats as soon as software manufacturers release the appropriate fixes
- rebooting the server periodically to ensure best performance
- ensuring backup processes are running correctly
- regularly checking the server logs for suspicious or unusual behaviour and dealing with the causes of any issues identified
- responding to any alerts from the server hosting company that the server is not running as expected and resolving the causes
In addition to this, regular housekeeping is required on your server to make sure it is running at its maximum capacity. The nature of this housekeeping can vary according to the environment and the functionality of your website. Regular inspection is important to in order to check that no irregular behaviour has taken place. This way, problems can be rectified before they lead to site downtime or an attack taking place. It may also be possible to identify possible weaknesses in the hardware thus allowing the components to be replaced before they fail and avoiding loss of data and site down-time.

Unfortunately no-one can guarantee 100% up-time or that your site will be 100% secure, but one thing all our maintenance contracts have in common is that in the event that the worst does happen and your server needs rebuilding and reconfiguring, we will carry this out at no extra cost!
